During the third Naval Battle of Guadalcanal USS Washington and USS South Dakota engaged a larger Japanese battlegroup, and blew away the IJN Kirishima in a slugfest of epic proportion.

The Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal was also a slugfest of legendary porportions.
