Report is that Japs have been landing since the 11th, and tomorrow a scouting party will leave 3 a.m. Am going to try to go.
August 19
Had a bad scare. Japs were reported surrounded the airport and every available man was called to try and close the lines.
August 20
Sighted no Japs. Volunteered to go behind lines walked about 15 miles, and swam across a muddy croc. inf. river - name unknown.
August 21
Battle of Tenaru River (Killed 1,406 Japs - lost 28 Marines) (est.) gun. Knocked over quite a few Japanese Imperial Marines ones who landed on "Wake - Guam - & D.E. Indies.
August 22
A couple Japs cans were in last nite and shelled for about an hr & half. Shells were short of the airport, but hit around our beach defenses.
August 23
Bombers were over and plastered bombs all over the place twice. Could hear shrapnel flying all over the damn place. Pat Healy, Dudek and I were in same hole. Zeros came down and straffed us. This is getting to be hell.
August 24
Bombers were over and criss crossed the bombs they dropped yesterday. Pattie Healy and Ed Dudek were buried in one of our m.g. gun nests about 30 yds from me. Pat died of concussion. Terruso & Nassef dug them out. I went after the corpsman. Ist man to die age 21.

Bombs were over. Bombed us heavily. Hit our ammo dump & spare parts. Few killed & wounded
